Hebrews 7:27–8:
● Jesus Is The Perfect Sacrifice
◊ Sinless(v. 26). “For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens.”
§ On the annual Day of Atonement, the high priest first had to sacrifice for himself before he could sacrifice for the people (Lev. 16). There were also daily sacrifices offered as a part of the temple ritual; and, if a priest had sinned, he had to bring a sacrifice for his own cleansing (Ex. 29:38–46; Lev. 4:3ff). But Jesus Christ offered just one sacrifice for our sins and settled the matter forever (see Heb. 9:23–28).
§ Because He was sinless He could become sin for us
· 2 Corinthians 5:21: God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
◊ Superior
§ Once-for-All (v. 27b). “… This He did once for all when He offered up Himself.” All of God’s work in history pointed to the sacrifice of Christ. Since His death and resurrection, everything looks back to the sacrifice of Christ for its foundation. Christ is the center of the history of grace. There is no grace without Him. Grace was planned from all eternity with Jesus Christ at the center and His death as the foundation.
◊ Salvation
§ John 14:6: Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
§ Jesus, through His work on the cross, opened the door for sinful rebellious man to enter into a relationship with a Holy God
● Jesus is Appointed
◊ As a Son(v. 28).
§ Matthew 3:17: And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
§ Matthew 17:5: While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
§ A First born son as in the most valuable thing to a father
◊ As a Priest
§ Hebrews 5:8-10: Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
· Melchizedek was not made Priest by Birth
· Not made priest by the law
§ Appointed by God, not by Man - Appointed Through His Oath not the Law
· Oath or promise?
¨ New covenant Hebrews 8:7 (Jer 31:33)
● Jesus is Risen
◊ Jesus Is Forever(v. 28b).
§ Hebrews 7:23-25: Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
· Never be a time, Never a place, Never a circumstance were Jesus cannot save those who come to Him
◊ Jesus Is Seated at the Right Hand of God(8:1). “… We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens …”
§ Jesus deals directly with God the Father.
§ He has a place of honor beside God
§ A Place of ruling authority
· 1 Peter 3:22: Jesus has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
◊ Jesus Is Ministering in Heaven(8:2). “A Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.” This is what cast on Mount Sinai a shadow that Moses copied. We are shown that the one final and ultimate reality is God and His Son interacting in love and holiness for our eternal salvation.
